Current is a multi-platform design journal that showcases creative, practice-based and applied research from the design community. It functions as a site for design researchers, design academics, students, professional designers and entrepreneurs to reflect on contemporary design. Over a period of four months, I worked alongside Karim Kadi and Megan Kwan to art direct the sixth issue of Current, which was released in May 2015.
The 1 Club
MDes Thesis Project
As a whole, the construct of a secret society mirrors the structure of the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community. Secret societies are, by nature, secret congregations operating within the public domain. Coincidentally, type 1 diabetics live under this same shroud of mystery and go about their daily ritualistic practices within a public space, quite easily undetected by strangers, colleagues and friends. In a literal sense, type 1 diabetics covertly treat a hidden disease, making the T1D community, by default, a secret one.
I employed language and story as design tools during the creation of The 1 Club, an imaginary secret society of type 1 diabetics. The 1 Club is representational of the actual T1D community. It serves as a means of transforming the T1D community into something more mysterious and exclusive, in order to appeal to young adult and adult type 1 diabetics who currently disregard the community as a resource.
Adam Veroni and I designed the visual identity for Maha's Brunch, an Egyptian restaurant in Toronto owned by our dear friends Monika, Mark and Maha.
The Ryerson School of Interior Design Year End Show committee hosts an annual gala to celebrate student achievement. I chaired an executive committee and four subcommittees, comprised of 25 fellow students in total. We developed our concept of RAW through a highly collaborate process, working with sustainable materials to decrease waste and ensure future use of constructed items. Our committee successfully raised $60,000 through community outreach, industry sponsorship and a first-time donation of $15,000 from Ryerson's President. Over 3,000 people attended the opening gala event.
BID Thesis Project
To me, meaning is essential to the design of a successful space. For this project I decided to use story, as story provides a space with context, and context provides a space with meaning.
Film is an excellent medium to tell stories. There are numerous similarities between the production of a film and the design of a space, however film readily lends itself to story simply because of its script.
I created a short film that takes place along Eastern Avenue, a highly industrialized street in Toronto. The story behind this film, entitled Cassette, provides context and subsequently a sense of meaning to this area.
